Challenges and Opportunities for Church Worship in China How the heart of a worshipper is shaped by the Lord

A Worshipper's Heart

Dear Intercessors and Supporters of RCMI,

For over forty years, worship in the Chinese church has evolved from simple pentatonic songs to today's diverse, collaborative, and creative worship. The commitment of young people, the increase in musical instruments, and the rapid renewal of worship culture bear witness to the new things the Lord is doing in the Chinese church.

However, progress in the outward form of worship also brings new tensions. Though outward worship is becoming more mature, we humbly acknowledge that there is still a vast amount of space for growth in our inner selves; and we must wait on the Lord to build us up. Worship can only be deeper if skills go hand in hand with lives transformed by truth.

Diverse styles will mature as we seek unity through wisdom, young people's fervor still needs the guidance of elders, and healthy division of labor can enable ministry expansion. We must remember that as professionalism increases, the fear of the Lord and the truth must remain our first priorities.

Despite these challenges, we still see abundant grace: the thirst for worship has never waned, the younger generation is actively involved, and more and more churches are beginning to form their own local worship cultures. Chinese worship is coming into a more mature stage.

The Simple, Sincere Worship of Traditional Rural Churches

A new generation of localized worship cultureis gradually taking shape.

This issue of our newsletter features Brother Simon, who is also responsible for pastoral care and church development for RCMI Ministry in Guangdong Province. He shares his worship journey. His story is a microcosm of the changes in worship in China, and it also shows us how God is raising up generation after generation of worshippers.

Brother Simon carefully teaches and nurturesthe growing young worship team.

Over the years, RCMI has cultivated andequipped countless Chinese worship teams.

Simon's Autobiography:

"A Worshipful Heart—My Worship Journey"

1) The starting point of the worship journey from uncertain notes played on small musical keyboard:

I became a Christian at the age of nine and actively participated in church activities from that time on. I started playing the piano at eleven and the guitar at twelve, after which age I began serving in meetings. At fourteen, with the support of the church, I formally began learning the piano and started serving as a piano accompanist in worship services. These years of training formed the foundation for my ministry in worship.

2)From Intercessory Prayer to Missionary Work: Responding to the Burden for China:

Because of the church's long-standing concern for China, I participated in intercessory prayer for China from an early age. After the opening in the late 1970s, I brought Bibles to the mainland many times and gradually came to understand that my main calling was in the field of music. In my thirties, God led me to Canada for professional musical training, where I could be better prepared for long-term ministry in China.

3)The Evolution of Worship in China: From Simplicity to Diversity:

Between 1980 and 2000, worship in Chinese churches primarily consisted of simple short songs and pentatonic hymns. Even if their singing wasn't entirely on key, brothers and sisters worshiped with enthusiasm. The worship in Pentecostal churches was very lively while traditional churches favored sacred hymns.

After 2010, groups such as "Stream of Praise" and "Joshua" spurred worship innovation. Their melodies and language resonated more with the Chinese psyche and attracted many young people to join bands and worship teams, resulting in a more mature development of worship practices overall.

More and more young people are actively joining bands and worship teams.

Equipment and Legacy: Raising the Next Generation of Worshippers

4) Equipment and Legacy: Raising the Next Generation of Worshippers:

For over a decade, I have taught keyboards, led music camps, and promoted training in worship in various regions. I emphasize not only technique but also the life of a worshiper on and off stage. I am grateful to have seen many worship teams grow and mature, with many members becoming capable of standing on their own. Gradually, they have formed a uniquely Chinese worship style.

5)Looking to the Future:May the fire of worship continue to burn!

I firmly believe that God is raising up a new generation of worshipers who are not only good at singing and playing instruments but also are people rooted in the truth who fear the Lord and love the church.

✦ 代禱事項

Prayer Requests: We pray the Lord raises up more music ministers to serve in the Chinese church.

We pray that the Lord will make worship not only beautiful in form, but also deeply rooted in truth and the Holy Spirit.

We pray the Lord will bless the ministry of equipping His Body to worship. May He nurture the next generation of worshipers who possess both skill and spiritual well-being.

Dear RCMI co-workers, intercessors, and family members,

The practice of worship in the Chinese church is undergoing a long and profound renewal. Every worshiper, every young person raised up to lead, is not an accident—it is God shaping His church.

RCMI's mission is continuously to equip, to accompany, and to nurture more worshipers in this crucial era. Your prayers and offerings are the reason that many have been equiped, nurtured, and sent.

If the Lord moves you to stand shoulder to shoulder with us, even to respond to the same call and offer yourself in this field, we sincerely welcome your participation:

-  To support through offerings the expansion and development of equipping worship ministry.

-  To equip more young people so that they become a blessing for the next generation of worship and missionary work.

RCMI's mission is to cultivate a new generation of equipped and sent-out worshipers.

May the Lord remember every seed you have sown on behalf of worshipers.

May His name be exalted through worship both in China and in all the nations!
